As interest in psychedelic-assisted therapies continues to grow within palliative and end-of-life care, many clinicians and caregivers are asking an important question:

Is there an alternative to supporting profound states of reflection, meaning and spiritual connection for people who may not want to use, or cannot use, psychedelics?

Meditative Heartbeat Therapy (MHbT) offers one possible answer.

Developed through years of bedside hospice care, MHbT is an emerging contemplative practice that uses a person’s own heartbeat as an anchor for awareness, guided reflection, emotional expression, and spiritual exploration. By bringing sustained attention to the rhythm of the heart, the practice can facilitate an expanded state of consciousness, creating space for meaningful memories, reconciliation, insight, and deep human connection.

While distinct from psychedelic therapy, MHbT shares many of the same intentions by supporting presence, transcendence, and meaning-making during life’s most significant transitions.

End of Life Psychedelic Care is honored to welcome hospice chaplain, medical theologian, and author Daniel DeLoma for a conversation exploring Meditative Heartbeat Therapy (MHbT) and its potential to deepen presence, meaning-making, and connection at the end of life.

In this presentation, Daniel DeLoma introduces the foundations of MHbT and explores how this innovative approach may complement existing models of palliative care, spiritual care, and psychedelic-informed end-of-life care.

Drawing from hospice case studies and more than a decade of bedside experience, DeLoma will explore how MHbT can support:

  • Cultivating presence and emotional safety during serious illness

  • Supporting reflection, life review, and meaning-making

  • Reducing anxiety and fostering spiritual well-being

  • Strengthening connection between patients, loved ones, and care teams

He will also explore:

  • The origins and theoretical foundations of Meditative Heartbeat Therapy

  • Hospice case examples demonstrating the practice in action

  • Opportunities to integrate MHbT alongside psychedelic-assisted care

  • Future directions for research and clinical application

As psychedelic-informed approaches continue to reshape end-of-life care, MHbT offers a complementary, non-pharmacological pathway for supporting expanded awareness, compassionate presence, and the deeply human work of preparing for death.

Presenter
Daniel DeLoma, M.Th., MSPC
Daniel DeLoma, M.Th., MSPC, is a hospice and palliative care chaplain, medical theologian, and founder of Meditative Heartbeat Therapy (MHbT), an integrative approach that brings together physiology, spirituality, and presence-based care in end-of-life settings. His book, Meditative Heartbeat Therapy: A Contemplative Guide to Presence, Rhythm, and Care at End of Life (Apocryphile, 2025), introduces the heartbeat as a clinical and relational anchor during the final stage of life. With more than a decade of experience in hospice and palliative care, including work in global settings, Daniel has accompanied patients across a wide range of clinical and social contexts, from home hospice to inpatient facilities. His clinical focus centers on the final seventy-two hours of life, with particular attention to shifts in communication, awareness, and relational presence. Daniel integrates ritual, narrative, and interdisciplinary collaboration in his work with the palliative care teams at Waveny Visiting Nurse and Hospice in Fairfield County, Connecticut. He is also a certified Reiki Master, End-of-Life Doula, and educator, and continues to develop and teach Meditative Heartbeat Therapy as a practical, clinically grounded approach to care when language begins to fade.
