Now in its sixth cohort, this six-session, live CME/CE online course is designed for those wishing to work at the intersection of psychedelics and end-of-life care. Led by experienced clinicians, educators, and spiritual care providers, the course integrates practical skills, medical screening, and legal context with an exploration of death as sacred transition, the client’s inner world, and how to create a container that supports safety, meaningful engagement, and spiritual inquiry.
This course is appropriate for healthcare professionals, end-of-life doulas, chaplains, therapists, psychedelic guides, and others who wish to thoughtfully engage psychedelic care at the end of life, whether or not they are already working directly with the medicines. The course meets live online from 12:00–1:30 pm ET / 9:00–10:30 am PT, unless noted below (three sessions are 2 hours long). Sessions are held on Thursdays from September 10 to October 15. Each session includes teaching, reflection, and opportunities for interaction. Although the course is best taken live, each session is recorded and available on our Thinkific platform with no expiration date.

New Pathways and Insights into Psychedelics for End of Life Care presents an overview of how psilocybin, ketamine, and MDMA are being used to address the mental, emotional, and spiritual challenges faced by individuals living with terminal or life-threatening illnesses. Cancer and Psilocybin Therapy: One Man’s Journey. Thomas Hartle was the first Canadian to be approved for psilocybin therapy under a special Health Canada Program. Initially diagnosed in 2016 with Stage 4 colon cancer, he was given 18 months to live. Thomas attributes his 7 psilocybin journeys since 2020 with enabling him to view his cancer as a blessing. Live Sessions and Instructors
Session 1, September 10: The “Oh Wow” of Dying: The Spirit and the Medicine, Rohini Kanniganti, MD, MSPH, HMDC
This opening session sets the spiritual and philosophical foundation for the course. Dr. Kanniganti explores death as a sacred transition and psychedelics as portals into expanded consciousness. Drawing from hospice medicine, mystical traditions, and lived clinical experience, she reframes death not as failure but as profound passage, inviting participants to reconsider how spirit, medicine, and dying intersect at the end of life.
Bio: Rohini Kanniganti MD, MSPH, HMDC, is a Board Certified Family Physician. She has served in Hospice and Palliative Care for over a decade, currently working with Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care in NC and Trailwinds Hospice in Boulder, CO . She has completed a fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry, the Ketamine Provider Certification and the Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Program through the Integrative Psychiatry Institute in Boulder. She is on the faculty of IPI, End of Life Psychedelic Care, Fluence, and TheraPsil-Canada. She has been featured on multiple podcasts including “The Conscious Physician Podcast”, “The Higher Practice Podcast”, “Tromedy”, and “TCN Talks”. She co-hosts “The Sound and the Healing”, and “Cultivating Grace”.
She brings together science and the sacred, and is always ready to be playful. She resides in Boulder, CO with her family.
Session 2, September 17: When Death Is Present: Understanding the Inner World of the Dying, Olga Nikolajev, RN, MA
Building on Session 1, this session focuses on the lived inner experience of individuals facing terminal or life-threatening illness. Olga explores the psychological, existential, and spiritual challenges that arise after diagnosis and how these shape psychedelic experiences. Participants deepen their understanding of client mindset, an essential foundation for ethical, safe, and meaningful psychedelic deathwork.
Bio: Olga Nikolajev, RN, MA, is a registered nurse, Fellow in Thanatology, and end-of-life doula educator with over 30 years of experience in hospice, palliative care, and death education. She is the founder of DyingMatters.ca and the Death Doula Ontario Network, and teaches thanatology and end-of-life doula programs across Canada. Olga is trained as a psychedelic-assisted therapy sitter with Therapsil, and her work focuses on psychedelics, spirituality, and creating safe, reflective spaces for end-of-life care.
Session 3, September 24: Screening Essentials for End of Life and Palliative Care, Ben Malcolm, PharmD, MPH, NOTE: this is a two hour session
This session addresses the medical and pharmacological considerations essential to safe psychedelic care at the end of life. Dr. Malcolm reviews contraindications, drug–drug interactions, and screening practices specific to medically complex populations. Through clinical guidance and case studies, participants learn how to assess risk and support safety in palliative and hospice contexts.
Bio: Ben Malcolm, PharmD, MPH, is a clinical psychiatric pharmacist, psychedelic educator, and founder of Spirit Pharmacist. He specializes in psychedelic pharmacology, safety, and drug interactions, with a focus on palliative and end-of-life care. Ben has published widely and teaches internationally, translating complex pharmacology into practical guidance for clinicians and care providers.
Sessions 4 & 5, October 1 and 8: Creating the Container at the End of Life, Part 1 & Holding the Container at the End of Life, Part 2, Norma Burton, MDiv. NOTE: these are both two hour sessions
Across these two sessions, Norma Burton, MDiv, teaches how psychedelic care is held in practice for those nearing death. Emphasizing safety, trust, and depth, she explores preparation, pacing, consent, family engagement, integrative practices, and practitioner presence. Participants gain actionable guidance for creating and sustaining a container that supports vulnerability, spiritual exploration, and ethical care at the end of life.
Bio: Rev. Norma Burton is a hospice chaplain, depth psychologist, and pioneer in psychedelic education with over 30 years of experience. Steeped in Buddhist practice and indigenous wisdom traditions, she co-authored Synthesis’s psychedelic facilitator training and served on Oregon’s Rules Advisory Committee. Her work bridges spirituality, psychology, and practice in altered states and end-of-life care.
Session 6, October 15: Legal Considerations and Legislative and Policy Reform for Psychedelic Care at End of Life, Kathryn Tucker, JD
Concluding the course, this session examines the evolving legal landscape of psychedelic care. Kathryn Tucker, JD, reviews current laws, access pathways, state reforms, Right to Try efforts, and policy developments relevant to end-of-life populations. Participants gain clarity on legal boundaries and emerging opportunities shaping ethical and lawful psychedelic practice.
Bio: Kathryn Tucker is an attorney and law professor with over 35 years of experience advancing the rights of people with terminal illness. A national leader in end-of-life advocacy and psychedelic law reform, she has led groundbreaking litigation and policy efforts to expand access to psychedelic-assisted therapy aligned with patient autonomy and values.
